Paste your text and the tool analyzes it using multiple readability formulas: Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Flesch Reading Ease, Gunning Fog Index, and Coleman-Liau Index. See word count, sentence count, average sentence length, and syllable statistics. Get a clear grade-level recommendation for your target audience.
For general web content, aim for 60-70 (easily understood by 13-15 year olds). Marketing copy should target 70-80 (easy). Academic writing typically scores 30-50. Scores above 80 indicate very simple text, below 30 indicates very difficult text.
The readability formulas were designed for English text and rely on syllable counting rules specific to English. While the tool will process any text, the scores are most accurate for English. For other languages, use the word/sentence statistics as general indicators.
The Gunning Fog Index estimates the years of formal education needed to understand text on first reading. A score of 12 means high school level, 16 means college level. It weights complex words (3+ syllables) heavily, making it particularly useful for business and technical writing.
