How the Italian Codice Fiscale works
- 3 letters from surname (consonants first, then vowels, padded with X)
- 3 letters from name (if 4+ consonants: 1st, 3rd, 4th; else consonants+vowels)
- 2 digits year + 1 letter month (A-T) + 2 digits day (females +40)
- 4-character municipality code (cadastral code)
- 1 check character calculated from the first 15 characters

Where do I find my municipality code?
Municipality codes (codici catastali) are on the Agenzia delle Entrate website. Common examples: F205 for Milan, H501 for Rome, L219 for Turin.
Is this legally valid for official documents?

Why does the day change for females?
The algorithm adds 40 to the birth day for females. A woman born on the 15th has 55 in the day field, encoding gender within the date portion.
