When to Use It

  • Ensuring marketing copy, website content, or emails are written at an appropriate reading level for your audience.
  • Editing academic papers, technical documentation, or legal text to make it more accessible to general readers.
  • Optimizing blog posts for SEO, as search engines tend to rank content at a 6th-8th grade reading level higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Flesch Reading Ease score should I aim for?

For general web content, aim for 60-70 (easily understood by 13-15 year olds). Marketing copy should target 70-80 (easy). Academic writing typically scores 30-50. Scores above 80 indicate very simple text, below 30 indicates very difficult text.

Does it work for non-English text?

The readability formulas were designed for English text and rely on syllable counting rules specific to English. While the tool will process any text, the scores are most accurate for English. For other languages, use the word/sentence statistics as general indicators.

What is the Gunning Fog Index?

The Gunning Fog Index estimates the years of formal education needed to understand text on first reading. A score of 12 means high school level, 16 means college level. It weights complex words (3+ syllables) heavily, making it particularly useful for business and technical writing.
